Deepwells Mansion Invites Guests to “The Last Masquerade of 1913”
This October, a new fictional legend brings the St. James landmark's history and eerie atmosphere to life
“The Last Masquerade of 1913” is an original fictional legend created by the Deepwells Farm Historical Society for this year’s Haunted Mansion experience. The tale imagines masked guests gathering at Deepwells before a storm rolls in—and strange events begin unfolding throughout the mansion and its grounds.
The story draws inspiration from the property’s real history. Deepwells Mansion was built in 1845 for Joel L.G. Smith, a descendant of Smithtown founder Richard “Bull” Smith. One of its notable residents was William J. Gaynor, who served as mayor of New York City.
Visitors will encounter a legend shaped by the mansion’s rooms, its surrounding landscape and the mystery of what might linger after dark. The society created the story to bring Deepwells’ history and atmosphere to life while celebrating the property’s documented past.
