This week, Dr. Mayerson shares what he likes about working in Smithtown and words of advice for prospective doctors. Check back each week to meet other Smithtown health professionals.

How long have you been practicing in Smithtown? 10 years.

What is your specialty? Neurology. I take care of patients who have had strokes and seizures or are in confusion states.

What injuries do you treat? Sports-related concussions, injuries to backs and necks.

What are your activities outside of your profession? Running, music and my family.

What is your favorite thing about being a doctor in Smithtown? The people in this community are a real pleasure to serve. They're good family people and are generally very respectful of doctors. It's just a nice area to practice medicine and families are very involved which is nice in terms of patient care.

What is a challenging aspect in your work? Issues with insurance, concerns about medicare and the volume of patients.

What words do you have for someone entering your field? You have to do what you love. Neurology is a great speciality in medicine but medicine itself is a profession that is changing. Doctors are losing independence and re-imbursements at ridiculous rates while the cost of maintaining a practice and keeping everything going is higher and higher.
