SMITHTOWN, NY — Fifth graders at Dogwood Elementary School recently took part in a meaningful classroom activity centered on belonging, part of the Smithtown Central School District’s ongoing Smithtown Promise initiative.

Students began the lesson by reading We’re All Wonders by R. J. Palacio, a story about a young boy who may look different from others but enjoys many of the same experiences as other children. In the book, the character reflects on the vastness of the world and the many different people within it, realizing that there is space for everyone to belong.

Following the reading, students worked together to create a classroom quilt celebrating individuality. Each fifth grader designed their own quilt square, writing about their personal character traits and what makes them unique. Students also added self-portraits to their squares, bringing their reflections to life visually.
