Driver Hospitalized After Car Bursts Into Flames: FD

The driver was able to get out of the car through the back window before it bursts into flames early Friday.

SMITHTOWN, NY - A man was hospitalized after a crash that caused a car to burst into flames in Smitthown early Friday, according to the Smithtown Fire Department.

Firefighters responded to a call of a single car on fire after being involved in an crash in front of TD Bank at the intersection of 347 and 111 at about 12:40 a.m.

The driver was able to get out of the car before it was completely engulfed in flames. He was originally knocked unconscious after the crash but awoke to the car filling with smoke.

He then got out of the car through the back window.

Crews then used firefighting foam to extinguish the fire which became fuel driven when the fuel tank of the car failed.

The driver was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital with minor injuries.

Firefighters were released by 1:20 a.m.
