SMITHTOWN, NY — The Fresh Market, a grocery store in Smithtown, had its exterior heavily damaged in a fire Friday night, said Smithtown Fire Department Public Information Officer Rick Torre. A car burst into flames up against the back of the building, causing the fire to spread to the market at 138 E. Main St., Torre said.
Smithtown firefighters arrived a few minutes after getting the call at 9:10 p.m. The fire was doused in under half an hour by roughly 75 firefighters, but the car was destroyed and there was extensive damage to the outside back section of The Fresh Market.
There was no internal damage to the market, said Meghan Flynn, director of communications & community for The Fresh Market. The store is still open and fully operational.
