Smithtown Teacher Calls Students Wearing Donald Trump Gear Racist in Facebook Post

BREAKING: District officials have said that they are aware of the post and are taking "immediate action."

A Smithtown teacher is being reprimanded after creating a post on Facebook stating that students wearing Donald Trump gear are "racist."

Several parents shared a screenshot of the post written by Smithtown High School West teacher Veronica Welsh that said:

This week is Spirit Week at Smithtown HS West. It’s easy to spot which students are racist by the Trump gear they’re sporting for USA Day.

Smithtown schools superintendent James Grossane said in a statement that the district was aware of the "inappropriate" post and will be taking "immediate action."

"As this is a matter of personnel, we are limited to sharing specific details but please be advised that we are handling this in a professional manner and all appropriate disciplinary actions are being taken," he said. "This is an extremely unfortunate incident and these actions are not promoted by the Smithtown Central School District Administration and Board of Education, nor do they reflect the attitudes of our students and staff."

District officials officials told Newsday that Welsh remains an employee of the district, but has been "administratively reassigned."
