Lake Grove Man Dies After SUV Plunges Into Water At Marina

Two officers jumped into the water to try to rescue the man, but he was pronounced dead at the hospital Monday night.

PORT JEFFERSON, NY – A 69-year-old Lake Grove man died after his SUV went into the water at the Port Jefferson Marina boat launch Monday night, police said.

According to Suffolk Police, a 911 call came in at 7:10 p.m. after witnesses saw a 1998 Toyota 4Runner that traveling eastbound on West Broadway drive into the water at the boat launch located off of West Broadway and Barnum Avenue.

Sixth Precinct officers Brian Christopher and Michael Cappelli responded and jumped into the water and extricated William Whalen, who was trapped in his SUV, which had become completely submerged.

Members of the Port Jefferson Village and Setauket fire departments also responded and went into the water to help free Whalen.

Whalen was transported to St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson where he was pronounced dead. The officers were transported to a local hospital where they were treated for hypothermia.
