Long Island Teen Killed in New Jersey Crash

A 14-year-old from Centereach was among two people killed in crash Saturday morning.

A teenager from Long Island and a Pennsylvania man were killed in a crash in New Jersey Saturday morning, police said.

The SUV they were in rammed into a dump truck that was stopped on the side of Route 80 East in Wayne, NorthJersey.com reported. Another person was seriously injured.

Michael Lavecchia, 37, of East Stroudsburg, Pa., was pronounced dead at the scene, The Record reported. A 14-year-old boy from Centereach, who was reportedly not wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the hospital. The other passenger, a 14-year-old boy who is related to Lavecchia, the report stated, was in critical condition. Police have not named either of the teens.

The crash happened just before 8 a.m., according to News 12 New Jersey.

A Honda CRV drove off the road and hit the back of a dump truck, which was parked on the shoulder, according to the report.

The driver of the dump truck was not in the vehicle at the time and was not injured, according to the report.

Possible drug paraphernalia was found in the Honda, NorthJersey.com reported, but authorities are waiting on the results of a toxicology report to determine if the driver was under the influence when the accident occurred.
