Man Charged In 2022 Smithtown Shooting: Police

He shot another man in the arm as he was getting into a vehicle outside a club over a year ago, police say.

SMITHTOWN, NY — A man was arrested Thursday in connection with a shooting outside a Smithtown club in July 2022, Suffolk police said.

Joseph Llapa, 22, of Bay Shore, shot a 23-year-old man in the arm as the man was getting into a vehicle as a passenger outside of a social club, at 253 West Main Street, around 3:45 a.m. July 3, 2022, police said.

The man who was shot suffered injuries that were not life-threatening and was taken to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore, police said.

Llapa was arrested on Fifth Avenue in Bay Shore and brought into the Fourth Precinct in Smithtown for arrest processing at 9:30 p.m. Thursday, police said.

He was charged with second-degree assault and first-degree reckless endangerment. He was held overnight at the Sixth Precinct and was scheduled to be arraigned Friday morning at First District Court in Central Islip.
