Mother, 2 Children Rescued From Smithtown House Fire
BREAKING: The fire broke out on Wednesday morning.
SMITHTOWN, NY - A woman and her two young children were hospitalized after a house fire broke out in Smithtown on Wednesday morning, according to a spokesman for the Smithtown Fire Department.
Firefighters received a call of a fire at a Sterling Lane home at about 3:11 a.m.
The mother and her children -- one believed to be about 3 or 4-years-old and one about 4-months-old -- were found trapped inside the house when firefighters arrived.

All three were rescued from the home and the fire was under control within an hour, authorities said. The woman was sent to St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown while the two children were transported to Stony Brook University Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.
All three are expected to survive.

The woman's husband and father of the children, who is believed to be a captain at the Hauppauge Fire Department, was away at the time of the fire serving in the United States Coast Guard Reserve at Fort Dix in New Jersey, according to the fire department.
The cause of the fire is still unknown and an investigation continues.
