On May 15, 2015, the employees of Options for Community Living wore green to help raise awareness about mental illness. Since 1949, May has been recognized as Mental Health Awareness Month in an effort to draw attention to the mental health issues that affect as many as one in four Americans.
“While advocacy groups and activists across the country try to draw attention to mental health issues, there continues to be a lack of empathy for people with mental illness,” said Yolanda Robano-Grosss, executive director, Options for Community Living. “Many people still do not understand that being diagnosed with a mental illness is just like having diabetes or cancer. Sadly, because of the stigma associated with mental illness, people are often too embarrassed to seek treatment. This needs to change.”
