Grocery Delivery Service Arrives On Long Island Tuesday

A new grocery delivery service has arrived on Long Island.

Instacart, a retail delivery service where shoppers hand pick and deliver items from local stores, announced on Monday that it will now offer grocery delivery to 110 new zip codes in the area.

Over 825,000 new homes will now have access to the service across Suffolk and Nassau counties.

Residents in the Instacart service area can start using the service on Tuesday, Aug. 1. Instacart customers can order from partner stores and have their groceries delivered straight to their doorsteps in as little as one hour.

Delivery is available from stores including Whole Foods Market, Petco, Costco, Best Market, Fairway and CVS.

To use the service, customers can visit www.Instacart.com or open the Instacart mobile app on their iPhone.

An Instacart personal shopper accepts the order on his/her smartphone, uses the Instacart Shopper app to guide them through shopping, and then delivers the order to the customer in the designated delivery timeframe.

When possible, Instacart says it works with retailers to bring shoppers the same prices as found in the physical store. In some cases, prices may be higher than in-store. Instacart doesn’t honor in-store discounts, but sales are available in select retailers in addition to Instacart coupons.

Instacart applies a service fee of 10 percent of your order total, but shoppers can remove the amount or select a different amount before you finish placing your order. Instacart sasy the fee "is used by Instacart to provide high guaranteed commissions to shoppers through the Instacart platform. However, this payment is not a tip and won’t go directly to the shopper who delivered your order." There's a separate option to tip the shopper.

“Long Island residents have really embraced Instacart and we have been working hard to expand our delivery area to include even more homes,” said Walker Dieckmann, Instacart's general manager. “We are excited to announce these 110 new zip codes and look forward to serving even more people in search of the time-saving convenience that the service offers.”
