NESCONSET, NY — Smithtown Central School District has named Matthew Furey as principal of Tackan Elementary School, effective July 1, the district said in a news release. "I am honored and humbled to join the Tackan Elementary School family and to become part of a school and community that have a truly stellar reputation for positive school involvement and for holding the education of our children in the highest regard," Furey said. "I am looking forward to working with all members of the Tackan family toward the continual growth of Tackan as a school in which students love to learn, teachers love to teach, and all members of our community know they are valued."
Furey has served as the assistant principal at Nesaquake since 2013. Prior to coming to Smithtown, he worked as an elementary teacher and middle school teacher in the Lindenhurst and North Shore school districts.
