New Principal Named At Smithtown Elementary School: 'I Am Excited'

SMITHTOWN, NY — Dr. Mary-Ellen Kakalos was named the new principal of Smithtown Elementary School, the school district announced.

Kakalos replaces Janine Lavery, who retired this past spring. Kakalos has more than 25 years of experience in education, according to the school district. She has served as a classroom teacher, reading specialist, literacy coach and, most recently, held the role of assistant principal at the
Seaford Manor Elementary school.

She completed her doctorate last year from St. John’s University with a focus on virtual professional development and adult learning.

"I am looking forward to meeting the students, families, and staff at Smithtown Elementary and to all of the wonderful memories they will create together!" Kakalos said in a news release. "I am excited to join the Smithtown team and begin the next chapter in my career as the principal of Smithtown Elementary school!"
