Over $1M Capital Project Approved To Improve Miller’s Pond Weir In Smithtown

SMITHTOWN, NY — A capital project to reconstruct the weir and flow-control structure at Miller’s Pond near Maple Avenue is moving forward, with a combined construction and inspection cost of $1,594,732, according to information released by the Office of Legislator Leslie Kennedy.

The Suffolk County Department of Public Works awarded the construction contract to Excav Services, Inc. The bid breakdown includes $1,414,284 for construction and $180,448 for construction inspection, according to legislator Kennedy's office.

According to the county’s Department of Public Works, the project will involve reconstructing the Miller’s Pond/Maple Avenue flow control structure. Mobilization and initial site clearing are expected to begin within the next several weeks.

County officials noted that lake levels may be adjusted periodically during construction to facilitate the work. The anticipated project duration is approximately six months.

County officials said construction staging equipment will be placed in the Miller’s Pond parking lot, and public access to portions of the park will be restricted during construction. Tree clearing is expected to begin in the near future as part of the project, though Suffolk County has a tree replacement and future planting plan in place, according to the notice.

Officials added that the project is not expected to change the overall appearance of the park, and street closures are not anticipated during the six-month construction period.
