Serious Crash Closes Route 347, Route 111 In Smithtown: Fire Officials
Fire officials say one person was trapped, a medivac helicopter landed at a nearby school, and 3 patients were transported.
SMITHTOWN, NY — A serious motor vehicle crash involving an overturned vehicle and an entrapped occupant shut down the intersection of Route 347 and Route 111 on Wednesday morning, according to the Smithtown Fire Department.
The department said it was activated at around 9:38 a.m. for a reported overturn, a person pinned inside a vehicle, and a possible vehicle fire at the intersection. Upon arrival, crews found no active fire, but one individual remained trapped inside a vehicle.
Multiple units responded, including Engine 5, Engine 15, Rescue 9, Rescue 19, Ambulances 6-1, 6-4, and 6-5, Medic 8,1, and Utility 11, fire officials said.

Due to the severity of the crash, Suffolk County police officers requested a medivac helicopter, which landed at Hauppauge Middle School. The Smithtown Fire Department officials said the Hauppauge Fire Department provided an engine standby during the helicopter operation.
In total, three patients were transported from the scene. Fire officials said crews operated for just over 30 minutes under the command of Captains Clarke and Creamer.

The intersection of Route 347 and Route 111 is expected to remain closed for several hours while an investigation is conducted. Drivers are advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes, according to the department.
