SMITHTOWN, NY — Angel and Blaze were named the Smithtown Animal Shelter's Pets of the Week.

Angel, a 6 year-old female blue nose pit, was dealt a bad hand in life, like many of her breed, according to the shelter. Her former owner would leave her outdoors, unattended for hours. After she was rescued, Angel quickly became attached to the shelter staff.

"She is always eager to be around people and get some belly rubs," the shelter wrote in an email. "She loves long walks and is highly intelligent. She’s learned to master all Agility Course obstacles and loves a relaxing swim in the puppy pool. She would do best in a home with breed experienced owners. Angel should be in a home where she is the sole pet in the house."

Blaze, a 7-year-old male pit terrier, came to the shelter after being dumped in a county park, locked in a cage, according to the shelter. However, he has truly begun to learn to love and trust humans again.

"[Blaze] enjoys running around in our dog park, eating treats, and when it’s hot out, splashing around in the pool!," said the shelter. "He can be a very loyal dog once he learns to trust you. Blaze knows his basic commands like sit, wait, give paw, and walks nicely on a leash. Blaze needs an adult-only home familiar with big breed dogs, without other pets. His ideal family will spend time giving him the love (and treats) that he deserves, understanding that he had a tough life before the Shelter."

If you are interested in meeting Angel or Blaze, please call ahead to schedule an hour to properly interact with them in a domestic setting, which includes the shelter's Meet and Greet Room, the dog runs and the Dog Walk trail. Family Pet Meet and Greets and at-home interactions are also welcome and an integral part of the adoption process.

There are no changes to the shelter's adoption process or hours as of last Wednesday amidst concerns regarding the new coronavirus, according to the Town of Smithtown.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Smithtown Animal Shelter has had to restrict public access to confirmed adoption appointments and animal/wildlife rescue. Hours are currently Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sundays are by appointment only.

The Smithtown Animal Shelter's primary concern is finding the perfect home for each animal that finds his/her way to it. The Animal Control Officers at the Smithtown Animal Shelter will go out of their way to ensure both the rescued and rescuer are made for one another. If you have other pets, you can arrange to bring your four-legged family member into the shelter or they can set up an at-home meet & greet to see how your prospective new addition does with other family members, pets or the household itself.
