SMITHTOWN, NY — Captain Kirk and Chester were named the Smithtown Animal Shelter's Pets of the Week.

Both are senior male domestic shorthairs. Both cats are FIV+ and have had rough lives in the streets before their time in the shelter, the organization wrote.

"For now, they’re just looking for the family they need and deserve," the shelter said. "They’ve got a lot of life experience under their belts, but have plenty more love left to give. Both good fellows would prefer to be in a home without dogs or other male cats."

Captain Kirk is the most loving cat you will ever meet, according to the shelter. He does have some neurological issues that affect his back legs, but you would never guess it, given his great attitude. He is always focusing on the positive, and would love to spend the rest of his days snuggling and cuddling with anyone.

Chester was brought into the shelter by a Good Samaritan who found him wandering the streets, the shelter said.

"If you want an affectionate cat, Chester is the right cat for you! Despite his rough start to life, he is still trusting and friendly to all people. He’s got a very social personality and loves to spend time with humans."

Currently, there are a variety of male and female cats & kittens available to adopt or foster.

"If you are looking for a fun loving, yarn tossing ball of love, stop by the Kitten Nursery or the Cat Condos at the Smithtown Animal Shelter and find a PURR-fect soulmate or two," the shelter stated.

Walk-In Hours at Smithtown Animal Shelter are currently Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sundays are by appointment only.

If you are interested in meeting Drone or Gabe, please call ahead to schedule an hour to properly interact with them in a domestic setting, which includes the shelter's Meet and Greet Room. Family Pet Meet and Greets and at-home interactions are also welcome and an integral part of the adoption process.

All of the felines at the shelter are current on vaccines and have received a full workup (blood work, Feline HIV & Leukemia tested, physical exam etc.) by a board-certified veterinarian.
