SMITHTOWN, NY — Holly and Mistletoe, a mother-and-daughter pair of cats, are the Smithtown Animal Shelter's Pets of the Week. Holly is 8 years old, while Mistletoe is 7.

The domestic shorthair mixes ended up at the shelter when their previous owner became ill.

"Holly had Mistletoe when she was very young, so these two have grown up together," the shelter wrote in an email. "Holly is outgoing and friendly with everyone she meets, while it takes Mistletoe a little bit of time to learn to trust people. Holly and Mistletoe would do well in a home with children and other cats. We would love for these two to be adopted into the same family."

All of the felines at the shelter are current on vaccines and have received a full workup (blood work, Feline HIV & Leukemia tested, physical exam etc.) by a board-certified veterinarian.

The Smithtown Animal Shelter has reopened, but because of the coronavirus, the shelter is continuing to practice social distancing in its facility, as well as indoor mask guidelines.

Hours are currently Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays and Wednesday evenings are by appointment only.

The Smithtown Animal Shelter's primary concern is finding the perfect home for each animal that finds his/her way to it. The Animal Control Officers and kennel attendants at the Smithtown Animal Shelter will go out of their way to ensure both the rescued and rescuer are made for one another. If you have other pets, you can arrange to bring your four-legged family member into the shelter or they can set up an at-home meet & greet to see how your prospective new addition does with other family members, pets or the household itself.

The shelter is also seeking foster volunteers. Foster parents provide temporary care for cats, kittens and dogs in their own homes. Some animals need as little as two weeks of care, while others may need care for an extended time.
