SMITHTOWN, NY — Meet Mr. Smithers and Max, as they were named the Smithtown Animal Shelter's Pets of the Week.

Mr. Smithers, a 10-year-old domestic shorthair who shares a name with "The Simpsons" character, is not the shy or quiet type, according to the shelter.

"This little chatterbox will let you know when he is in need of some more TLC or attention," the shelter wrote. "If the occasional meow doesn’t do the trick, this dapper gentleman will cuddle up to you with a nudge to ask for more attention."

Mr. Smithers was previously named the Smithtown Animal Shelter's Pet of the Week in mid-January. He was brought to the shelter by a Good Samaritan who found him crying in a bush on Smithtown Boulevard. He has a hyperthyroid condition that requires a little extra care, but this is easily managed with daily medications. The shelter said Mr. Smithers would make a wonderful addition to any family.

Max, an 8-year-old basset hound/corgi, has come out of shell during his time at the shelter, staff said.

"He was surrendered to the Smithtown Animal Shelter, and may have experienced some type of trauma in the past," the shelter said. "As a result, Max is a little cautious when meeting new people before warming up to you. However, anyone who knows Max will tell you it is well worth a few visits to gain his trust. Once he lets you into his heart, the affection and love Max gives is truly endless."

Max would be best suited in a home without cats and young children. He does get along with mellow dogs who know not to play too rough.

For those wishing to meet Max, please call ahead to schedule an hour to properly interact with him in a domestic setting, which includes the shelter's Meet and Greet Room, the dog runs and the Dog Walk trail. Family Pet Meet and Greets and at-home interactions are also welcome and an integral part of the adoption process.

In the case of Mr. Smithers, there are currently a variety of male and female cats & kittens available to adopt or foster.

"If you are looking for a fun loving, yarn tossing ball of love, stop by the Kitten Nursery or the Cat Condos at the Smithtown Animal Shelter and find a PURR-fect soulmate or two," the shelter stated.

All of the felines at the shelter are current on vaccines and have received a full workup (blood work, Feline HIV & Leukemia tested, physical exam etc.) by a board-certified veterinarian.

Walk-In Hours at Smithtown Animal Shelter are currently Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sundays are by appointment only.

The Smithtown Animal Shelter's primary concern is finding the perfect home for each animal that finds his/her way to it. The Animal Control Officers at the Smithtown Animal Shelter will go out of their way to ensure both the rescued and rescuer are made for one another. If you have other pets, you can arrange to bring your four-legged family member into the shelter or they can set up an at-home meet & greet to see how your prospective new addition does with other family members, pets or the household itself.
