SMITHTOWN, NY — Nora and Peggy, a pair of strays whose lives have turned around since being taken in by the Smithtown Animal Shelter, were named the community's featured pets of the week.

Nora is a pint-sized 1-year-old female lab and terrier mix. She was brought into the shelter as a stray after she was found wandering the Long Island Expressway service road.

"She was initially very nervous, but her time in the shelter has helped her come out of her shell and turned her into the energetic girl she is now!," the shelter wrote via email. "If you come to visit Nora, she’ll run up to you and give you a big kiss. She can be the perfect snuggle buddy, or a great friend to play with. Nora would be a great fit for a home with children."

Peggy is a 6-month-old female domestic shorthair kitten. She went to the shelter as part of the Trap-Neuter-Release program, and she instantly started looking for affection, staff said.

"Peggy is gentle and shy, but she loves to be loved by people!," the shelter said. "She’s great with children, and would do well in a home with other cats. Peggy unfortunately has a ruptured ear drum which causes her to have a chronic stuffy nose. Her perfect home would be a quiet place where she can cuddle and play all day."

For those wishing to meet Nora, please call ahead to schedule an hour to properly interact with her in a domestic setting, which includes the shelter's Meet and Greet Room, the dog runs and the Dog Walk trail. Family Pet Meet and Greets and at-home interactions are also welcome and an integral part of the adoption process.

In the case of Peggy, there are currently a variety of male and female cats & kittens available to adopt or foster.

"If you are looking for a fun loving, yarn tossing ball of love, stop by the Kitten Nursery or the Cat Condos at the Smithtown Animal Shelter and find a PURR-fect soulmate or two," the shelter stated.

There are no changes to the shelter's adoption process or hours as of Wednesday amid concerns regarding the new coronavirus.

All of the felines at the shelter are current on vaccines and have received a full workup (blood work, Feline HIV & Leukemia tested, physical exam etc.) by a board-certified veterinarian.

Walk-In Hours at Smithtown Animal Shelter are currently Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sundays are by appointment only.

The Smithtown Animal Shelter's primary concern is finding the perfect home for each animal that finds his/her way to it. The Animal Control Officers at the Smithtown Animal Shelter will go out of their way to ensure both the rescued and rescuer are made for one another. If you have other pets, you can arrange to bring your four-legged family member into the shelter or they can set up an at-home meet & greet to see how your prospective new addition does with other family members, pets or the household itself.
