Smithtown Approves $6M Overhaul Of Town Marina

SMITHTOWN, NY — Smithtown officials have approved a $6 million capital bond authorization for a major renovation of the Town Marina, including new docks, expanded capacity and improvements to the shoreline, utilities and surrounding property.

The Town Board adopted the authorization during its July 14 meeting, allowing the town’s Engineering Department to advance the project.

Plans call for rebuilding more than 500 feet of aging shoreline infrastructure with a new steel bulkhead system. Targeted dredging will also be conducted to improve water depth and make it easier for vessels to navigate the marina, town officials said.

The marina’s existing floating docks will be removed and replaced with new facilities equipped with ladders and Americans with Disabilities Act-accessible gangways.

Upgrades to the mooring and guide-pile systems are expected to increase the number of available berths while improving vessel security and safety for boaters, visitors and marina employees, officials said.

“This project represents a major commitment to the future of Smithtown’s waterfront and to the generations of residents who have waited decades to enjoy our Town Marina,” Smithtown Supervisor Edward Wehrheim said.

The project is intended to do more than replace aging infrastructure. The project also includes a new pump-out station, upgraded water service and a new electrical distribution system. The electrical work will provide improved lighting and more reliable power for current and future marina operations, according to the town.

“We are creating a safer, more accessible and more resilient waterfront destination that will meet growing demand, enhance the boating experience and protect our environment for decades to come,” he said.

New drainage and stormwater treatment systems will be installed to better manage runoff. Other site improvements include pavement, curbing, sidewalks, timber guide rails and additional safety features.

Town Engineer Mark Riley described the project as a comprehensive modernization extending from the shoreline and floating docks to the utilities, drainage systems and surrounding waterfront property.

Landscaping plans include native coastal grasses, evergreen trees, shrubs, turf areas and decorative split-rail fencing.

“Every component has been thoughtfully designed to improve safety, reliability and long-term resiliency,” Riley said.

Town officials did not provide a construction timeline or say when the renovated marina is expected to open.
