Smithtown Crash Kills 1, Kings Park Woman Charged With DWI
Accident occurred just after midnight, police say.
An Island Park man was killed in a head-on crash in Smithtown early Friday and the Kings Park woman driving the other vehicle is charged with DWI, police said.
According to police, Natalia Simons, 36, was driving a 2013 Nissan Rogue north on Route 25A when her vehicle crossed over into the southbound lane and struck a 2012 Toyota Camry, which was heading south on Route 25A at about 12:05 a.m.
The driver of the Camry, 59-year-old Larry Garwood, needed to extricated from his car by Smithtown firefighters. He was transported via Smithtown Ambulance to St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Simons was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital also via Smithtown Ambulance. She is being treated for non-life threatening injuries, police said.
Simons was charged with DWI and will be arraigned at a later date.

Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks and the investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact the Vehicular Crime Unit at 631-852-6555 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
