Dogwood Elementary Unites For Autism Awareness Week
Second graders are fostering an understanding of the positive traits of autism and promoting an inclusive learning environment for all.

SMITHTOWN, NY — Second grade students at Dogwood Elementary School are coming together during Autism Acceptance Week to help foster an understanding of the positive traits of autism and promote an inclusive learning environment for all, the Smithtown School District announced.
On Tuesday, students and staff wore red, gold or rainbow colors to show love, support and acceptance of those with autism.
"Children were shown a video that educated them about autism and the unique traits of autism," the district wrote. "Students learned how to celebrate everyone's uniqueness and to be sensitive to the needs of others. April marks Autism Acceptance Month and is meant to be a time for uplifting autistic voices and sharing in the community."
