Smithtown Police Blotter: 2 Identity Thefts Reported

In one of the cases, a thief made multiple transactions using someone else's bank account information, police say.

The Suffolk County Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.

  • Jan. 6: Identity theft (first-degree) was reported on Sunny Road in St. James from Nov. 20, 2021, at 9 a.m. A person gained access to someone's bank account sometime since November and made a withdrawal, police said.
  • Jan. 6: Grand larceny (fourth-degree) was reported on Hawkins Avenue in Lake Grove from Dec. 28 at 3:01 p.m. An employee of a business reported being contacted by someone claiming to work for PSEG who said if the employee did not pay cash, electricity would be cut from the business, police said. The employee sent the money, police said. Police did not name the business.
  • Jan. 1: Identity theft (first-degree) was reported on Prospect Street in Smithtown from Dec. 23 at 12:01 a.m. A thief made multiple transactions using someone else's bank account information, police said.
