Smithtown Police Blotter: 2 People Scammed Over Phone
A person claiming to work for PSEG called someone and told them to buy two $500 gift cards or their electricity would go off, police say.

The Suffolk County Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.
- Sept. 11: Grand larceny (third-degree) was reported on Alexander Avenue in Lake Grove at 4:59 p.m. A man entered Trek Bicycle Lake Grove, grabbed a bicycle and ran out the door with it, police said. He threw the bicycle into a black SUV and then drove off eastbound on Route 347, police said.
- Sept. 7: Grand larceny (fourth-degree) was reported on East Main Street in Village of the Branch at 1:30 p.m. Someone claiming to be a U.S. Customs Immigration worker called a Village of the Branch resident and told him that he needed to pay money to receive his Visa card, police said. The resident paid, police said.
- Sept. 5: Identity theft (second-degree) was reported on Timber Croft Way in Smithtown from Sept. 3 at 4 p.m. A person claiming to work for PSEG called a Smithtown resident and told him that his electricity would be shut off if he did not make an immediate payment, police said. The resident was told to purchase two $500 gift cards, police said. The man purchased the cards and gave the scammer the numbers on them, police said.
