Smithtown Police Blotter: Car Driven Into 'Political' Mailbox

ALSO: A woman was scammed out of money by someone claiming to be an FBI agent, police say.

The Suffolk County Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.

  • Oct. 30: Criminal mischief (fourth-degree) was reported on Copperbeech Road in St. James at 1:45 a.m. Somebody decorated their mailbox with political items, prompting someone to purposely drive across their lawn to hit the mailbox, police said. Police would not give specific details on how the mailbox was decorated.
  • Oct. 30: Grand larceny (third-degree) was reported on Scarborough Drive in Nesconset from Oct. 27 at 11 a.m. A woman answered a phone call from someone claiming to be from the FBI who told her that her social security number had been compromised, police said. The woman sent them cash via UPS, police said. The package has been signed for and picked up, police said. Financial Crimes is investigating.
  • Oct. 29: Criminal mischief (fourth-degree) was reported on Dillmont Drive in Smithtown from Oct. 8 at noon. Someone damaged the back door handle of a home and broke in, police said.
  • Oct. 28: Aggravated harassment (second-degree) was reported on Central Road in Smithtown from Oct. 27 at 9 a.m. A student at Smithtown High School West received a threatening message from someone over Snapchat, police said.
  • Oct. 25: Grand larceny (fourth-degree) was reported on Hilltop Drive in Smithtown from Oct. 18 at 10 p.m. Someone paid money for a transmission through Facebook Marketplace, police said. After the payment was made, the seller removed the item and ghosted the man, police said.
  • Oct. 25: Identity theft (first-degree) was reported on Hallock Road in Lake Grove at 8:05 p.m. Someone filed a complaint with the Small Business Administration for a loan in the victim's name, police said.
