Smithtown Police Blotter: Multiple People Fall Victim To Scams

Someone gave their bank information out over the phone, and then their money, as well as their daughter's, was stolen, police say.

SMITHTOWN, NY — Curious about what's going on in your neighborhood? Check out the recent crimes reported in the area between July 31 and Aug. 6.

The Suffolk County Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.

  • Aug. 4: Grand larceny (third-degree) was reported on Brookvale Lane in Lake Grove from Aug. 1 at 6 p.m. A man went for a job interview at a fake company and was sent a $3,500 check to buy a laptop, and he sent the money to a Zelle account, police said. The check did not clear, police said.
  • Aug. 3: Grand larceny (third-degree) was reported on Addie Lane in Nesconset from Aug. 1 at 3:09 p.m. A woman's iPad was frozen, and there was a fake ad and phone number to get the iPad fixed, police said. She called the number and was told to buy gift cards and provide the numbers on them, which she did, and she got scammed, police said.
  • Aug. 1: Grand larceny (third-degree) was reported on Morewood Drive in Smithtown from July 21 at noon. A person gave bank information over the phone, and their money and their daughter's money got moved to separate accounts, police said.
