Smithtown Police Blotter: Person Scammed Out Of $250,000
ALSO: Multiple businesses were broken into, police say.
SMITHTOWN, NY — Curious about what's going on in your neighborhood? Check out the recent crimes reported in the area between March 27 and April 2.
The Suffolk County Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.
- April 2: Burglary (third-degree) was reported on Smithtown Boulevard in Nesconset at 12:56 a.m. Someone used a brick to break the glass front door of Giorgio's Pizzeria and stole cash, police said.
- April 2: Burglary (third-degree) was reported on Smithtown Boulevard in Nesconset at 12:54 a.m. A person forced open the Dunkin' Donuts drive-thru window to gain entry, police said. The burglar checked the registers, but they were empty, police said.
- April 1: Burglary (third-degree) was reported on Lake Avenue in St. James from March 31 at 9 p.m. Someone threw a rock through the front door of Chinese Kitchen, breaking glass, police said. A cash register containing cash was stolen, police said.
- April 1: Grand larceny (second-degree) was reported on Sterling Lane in Smithtown from March 24 at 9 a.m. A person was contacted by someone claiming to be from Geek Squad and believed they were getting a refund, police said. The person fell victim to a $100,000 wire transfer scam, police said.
- March 31: Grand larceny (third-degree) was reported on Southern Boulevard in Nesconset at 3:45 p.m. Someone broke into a pickup truck by smashing the front passenger-side window and stole cash, police said.
- March 30: Grand larceny (second-degree) was reported on Meadow Road in Smithtown from Aug. 24, 2021, at noon. A person was contacted by a woman on Facebook who claimed to work for a bank, police said. The person transferred $250,000 to the scammer, police said.
- March 29: Grand larceny (second-degree) was reported on Hartsdale Street in Smithtown at 10:40 a.m. A scammer told someone their son was involved in a car crash and needed bail money, police said. The parent sent the money, police said.
- March 27: Burglary (third-degree) was reported on Smithtown Boulevard in Nesconset from March 26 at 11:41 p.m. Someone threw an object through a business's glass door, entered the building, broke into a cash register and stole cash, police said.
