Smithtown Police Blotter: Thief Steals Checks From Mailbox

ALSO: Someone damaged cars and stole hand tools, police say.

SMITHTOWN, NY — Curious about what's going on in your neighborhood? Check out the recent crimes reported in the area between May 15 and May 21.

The Suffolk County Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.

  • May 18: Grand larceny (fourth-degree) was reported on Lake Avenue South in Nesconset from May 17 at 6:15 p.m. Someone entered a parking lot of Sunray Services sometime overnight between May 17 and May 18 and broke the passenger side windows of a 2012 Nissan van and a 2014 Nissan van and stole multiple Milwaukee hand tools, police said.
  • May 18: Identity theft (first-degree) was reported on Eden Drive in Smithtown at 3:11 p.m. A person stole checks out of a mailbox and changed the name on the checks to cash them and steal the cash, police said.
  • May 16: Identity theft (first-degree) was reported on Meadow Road in Smithtown from May 10 at 12:01 a.m. Someone electronically accessed someone else’s bank account and transferred money out of the account, police said.
