Smithtown Schools Visited By Suffolk Police, Aviation Unit
The department landed its "flying air ambulance" to teach students about medical emergencies involving trauma.
SMITHTOWN, NY — Smithtown High School East and Smithtown High School West biomedical science students were treated to a prearranged visit by the Suffolk County Police Department and the Aviation unit on April 29, the school district announced.
The department’s medevac helicopter, which is registered as a "flying air ambulance," and officers, landed at Smithtown High School East to teach students about their work. The officers explained that they most often respond to medical emergencies involving trauma, such as a car crash. A heart monitor, stretcher, blood pressure medication and more are all on board.
The helicopter is equipped with an infrared camera that can locate people because they emit body heat. The second pilot in the cockpit also can monitor a color camera that can zoom up to 18 times.

The crew also responds to missing persons calls as well as water rescues.
The visit served as an example of the close partnership between the Smithtown Central School District and the Suffolk County Police Department.
