Smithtown Welcomes Girl Scouts For Hands-On Lesson In Government, Leadership

Cadette Troop 572 and Junior Troop 2714 visited Town Hall for a hands-on civic experience.

SMITHTOWN, NY — The Town of Smithtown welcomed Cadette Troop 572 and Junior Troop 2714 from St. Patrick’s School to Town Hall on March 6, in recognition of Girl Scout Day, offering students a firsthand look at local government and civic leadership.

The visit was part of the Girl Scouts Democracy Badge program, designed to help young students understand how government works and how they can play a role in their communities. The Scouts engaged in a series of interactive activities that highlighted leadership, collaboration, and public service

“Watching these young ladies step into leadership roles, ask thoughtful questions, and embrace civic responsibility was incredibly encouraging,” Town Supervisor Ed Wehrheim said. “They brought determination, confidence, and a genuine sense of purpose to every part of the day — the very qualities that will help shape strong communities for years to come.”

As part of the program, Town Clerk Tom McCarthy and Councilwoman Lynne Nowick led the students through a mock Town Board meeting, giving them a realistic look at how local decisions are discussed and made. The exercise encouraged the Scouts to think critically, listen to different perspectives, and work together on community issues.

The experience also included a lesson in land use planning led by Environmental Planner Liam Trotta. Students were tasked with developing a site plan for an all-abilities playground, challenging them to think creatively about accessibility and inclusion in public spaces.

In the second half of the visit, Scouts met with members of Smithtown Public Safety, who explained how they help protect residents on land and water. Animal Control officers shared stories about rescuing abandoned pets and protecting wildlife, while Recreation Department Superintendent Brandon Modrov spoke about the importance of community service and giving back.

Town officials said the program is part of a broader effort to engage young residents in public service and inspire future leaders.

The Town of Smithtown offers tours and educational programs for schools, Scout troops, and youth organizations interested in learning more about local government. Those interested in scheduling a visit can email the Supervisor’s office at Supervisor@SmithtownNY.gov.
