SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY — Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone has joined United States Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) in calling for the impeachment or removal of President Donald Trump from office.

Rioters breached the Capitol in Washington D.C. on Wednesday in a bid to stop the certification of votes for President-elect Joe Biden, who controversially defeated Trump in the 2020 race for the White House.

Bellone called for Trump's removal ahead of the scheduled Jan. 20 transition of power in a statement on Thursday.

"The President is directly responsible for inciting the insurrection that transpired in our nation’s capital," Bellone said. "He is just as culpable as the mob that attacked the rule of law, our democratic principles, and law enforcement. "Therefore, I urge our members of Congress to support Senator Schumer’s call to invoke the 25th Amendment or begin impeachment proceedings immediately."

Trump told a crowd of protesters he would never concede the election and asked everyone to remain peaceful.

"No violence!" Trump tweeted. "Remember, WE are the Party of Law & Order — respect the Law and our great men and women in Blue. Thank you!"

Members of Congress were evacuated as violence escalated. A California woman was shot and later died. Three others died around the Capitol grounds, according to D.C.'s police chief. Metropolitan Police in D.C. made 69 arrests, according to a reporter from The Hill.

Trump later said there would be an "orderly transition of power" on Jan. 20.
