SMITHTOWN, NY — Just before holiday break, the second graders at Tackan Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District participated in hands-on activities during their winter work centers.

Rotating through the four different classrooms, the students participated in making different art projects, such as a penguin made out of hearts, a snow globe, fingerprint snowmen and gingerbread men using glyphs to decode the different parts of the body. Along with the art projects, the second graders wrote about the wintertime and what it means to them.
