What?!!! Get a fine for hurting a Praying Mantis? Get arrested for killing one? It’s an endangered species, isn’t it?
While everyone loves a praying mantis, they are not protected by NY State or Federal laws. And the praying mantis is not an endangered species.
Praying Mantis Basics
The “Praying Mantis” is an amazing insect. They got their name because their large legs appear to be folded in prayer. Praying mantis eats other insects and are not picky eaters. They eat any bug including other praying mantis! Those front legs are equipped with spikes. You might feel a little pinch if you held one. These insects grow to be about 6 inches long and are sometimes kept as pets.
