Woman Dies After Crashing Into Building at Smith Haven Mall

A Patchogue woman who suffered a medical event, causing her car to crash into the Smith Haven Mall in Lake Grove on Friday afternoon, has died, police say.

According to authorities, Margherita Giaquinto, 77, was driving a 2015 Mercedes-Benz in the mall parking lot when she suffered an apparent medical emergency and crashed into a pole and the building at 2 p.m.

Giaquinto was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The vehicle was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is continuing.
