1 Critically Injured In Head-On, Wrong-Way DWI Crash On LI: Police

The driver who was charged with driving while intoxicated was uninjured, police say.

EAST QUOGUE, NY — One person was critically injured in a wrong-way DWI crash on Sunrise Highway in East Quogue early Saturday, police said.

According to New York State Police, the crash took place just after 1 a.m. in the westbound lane of Sunrise Highway between Exits 64 and 65.

Nestor Huartan, 50, of East Quogue, who was driving a 2020 Ford Explorer, was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes on Sunrise Highway when he struck a 2016 Volkswagen GTI head-on, police said.

The driver of the Volkswagen was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital in critical condition, and the passenger was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Huartan, who was uninjured in the crash, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, police said. Huartan was arraigned at Southampton Town Court and released, police said.

The New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation, collision reconstruction unit, and the forensic identification unit all responded to the scene, police said.

The crash is still under investigation and state police are asking for any witnesses or anyone with information to call 631-756-3300.
