2 Kayakers Saved After 'Extensive' Search: PD

Their kayak overturned, forcing both men to cling to the sides, police say.

SOUTHAMPTON, NY — Two men were rescued after their kayak overturned in the Sebonac Inlet in North Sea Friday, police said.

According to Southampton Town police, the incident took place at 5:51 p.m.; a kayaker called police in distress. The caller said he was fishing with another man when the kayak overturned, forcing both to cling to the sides, police said.

Several patrol units, Southampton Town police bay constables, and the U.S. Coast Guard responded to the area, along with North Sea, Southold and Southampton Fire departments, police said.

After an extensive search, the two men were found, pulled aboard a U.S. Coast Guard vessel and brought to safety, police said.

One of the men was medically cleared at the scene; the other male was transported to an area hospital by Southampton Volunteer Ambulance, due to hypothermia, police said.
