Officers, Firefighter Treated At Hospital After Blaze: Officials
The fire broke out in a home on Lewis Street, off Rogers Avenue, the Southampton Fire Department says.

SOUTHAMPTON, NY — Two Southampton Village Police officers and one firefighter were treated at the hospital after a "large" house fire broke out Wednesday night, officials said.
According to Chris Brenner, public information officer for the Southampton Fire Department, the fire was reported just after 8 p.m. in a home on Lewis Street, off Rogers Avenue, in Southampton.
Two Southampton Village police officers were transported to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation; one firefighter was taken to the hospital with a minor injury, Brenner said. All were transported by Southampton Village Volunteer Ambulance, he said.

Brenner commended the police, who arrived at the scene first and made a "valiant effort to search the residence" and make sure no one was home; the house was empty, he said. "They did an amazing job," he said.

The second floor of the home was destroyed, and the first sustained heavy smoke and water damage, Brenner said.
The Southampton Fire Department also were commended for their rapid response, and for knocking down the blaze within 30 minutes, Brenner said. The North Sea Fire Department responded with manpower and the Hampton Bays Fire Department provided a rapid intervention team, he said.
Southampton Fire Chief Alfred Callahan was the chief in charge at the scene, he said.
"A great job was done by all members," Brenner said.
Brenner, thanking the Southampton Village Police for their amazing efforts to search the home, reminded that many police officers wear multiple hats, serving with volunteer ambulance corps and as volunteer firefighters.
Southampton Village Volunteer Ambulance also helped to assess 30 firemen after battling the working structure fire, he said.
