#78 - Fill Up a Glass at Southampton Publick House

The Hamptons brew pub offers local beers at the bar, or growlers to go.

For beer enthusiasts — or for beer drinkers of all stripes, for that matter — and for those who prefer their food and drink prepared local, offers a round-the-year offering long after the summer crowds go home.

Opened in 1996 under the direction of owner Don Sullivan, consists of a both restaurant and brew pub, brewing beers on site on the bar side of the old building while serving sit-down meals on the other.

Head Brewer Phil Markowski has been with the Publick House just as long, though in the past 15 years, the microbrewey has outgrown its space and now contracts most of its operations in Saratoga Springs and Brooklyn. Assistant Brewer Evan Addario holds down the fort in Southampton most often, and last Thursday opened up his first batch of Pumpkin Ale, with Oktoberfest soon to follow at the end of the month.

Though some brewers release seasonals before the season arrives in order to get a jump on the market, Addario half-jokingly says, "We refuse to release them earlier. We're not ready for an Oktoberfest yet. And having a Pumpkin Ale on Labor Day weekend — it's still gorgeous weather."

On tap now at the tasting room is the Pumpkin, the North Fork Fresh Hop (an extra special bitter using hops grown in Laurel), and a Raspberry Wheat, in addition to the normal rotation. On tap at any time of year you'll find a Double White, an Altbier, an India Pale Ale, and Montauk Light, a golden ale.

Coming up soon, Addario is planning an Espresso Stout, and recently collaborated on a batch of Rye E.S.B. with Greenport Harbor Brewing Company.

Those looking to get a taste can drop by, post up at the bar in front of a handful of flat screens, and fill up a mug. Or those on the run can fill up a growler.
