FLANDERS, NY — A traffic stop for speeding led to the arrest of a driver and his passenger in Flanders Tuesday, police said.
According to Southampton Town police, at about 4:16 p.m. on Flanders Road near Red Creek Road, a member of the traffic mitigation unit stopped a vehicle for speeding.
Upon further investigation it was revealed that the driver, Fidel Alejandro Carpio Umana, 18, of Riverhead, and front passenger, Carlos Lopez, 18 of Riverhead, both had active warrants for their arrest out of the Suffolk County Police Department, police said.
They were taken into custody, police said.
The driver, Carpio Umana, was also found to be in possession of a forged identification card and a fake Social Security card, police said.
Carpio Umana was arrested and charged with two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument, a felony; and third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle, a misdemeanor, police said.
Carpio Umana was held for morning arraignment at Southampton Town Court and the passenger Lopez was taken into custody on his bench warrant and transferred to the custody of the Suffolk County Police Department, police said.
