LONG ISLAND, NY — An extreme heat watch is in effect for Long Island from Wednesday afternoon through Friday evening, the National Weather Service said.
Dangerously hot conditions with heat index values between 105 to 110 degrees are possible, the NWS said. Coastal areas on Long Island will likely see peak heat index values closer to 100 to 105 degrees, the NWS said.
Extreme heat and humidity will significantly increase the potential for heat-related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities, the NWS said.
Also, there is potential for the dangerous heat to continue into Saturday, officials said.
Seniors and those with chronic health problems or mental health conditions are at an increased risk, the NWS said.
Homes without air conditioning can be much hotter than outdoor temperatures; residents are advised to use air conditioning to stay cool at home or go to a place that has air conditioning, officials said.
Those without home air conditioning should continue to seek out cool spaces each day as long as it remains hot, and for a few days after if their homes are still hot, the NWS said.
"Check on vulnerable friends, family members and neighbors," the NWS said.
To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments, the NWS said.
Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.
"Heat stroke is an emergency," officials added. "In cases of heat stroke, call 911."
