Boat Crash Leads To Serious Injuries For 2 Onboard; Operator Leaves Scene, Facing Felony Charges: PD

SAG HARBOR, NY — A Southampton boat operator who crashed into a Sag Harbor jetty, seriously injuring two passengers, and then fled the scene, is facing felony charges, police said.

According to Southampton Town police, the incident occurred on the evening of July 5; the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation was requested by Sag Harbor Village police on July 6, police said.

Following the preliminary investigation, the New York State Police adopted the case, police said.

On Sunday at about 10:07 p.m., Sag Harbor Village police received a report of a boat that had struck a jetty in Sag Harbor Bay, police said.

The investigation revealed that the operator of the vessel, later identified as Peter Mangiameli, 57, of Southampton, was operating a 2023, 35-foot cruise boat from Sag Harbor Bay into the harbor when the vessel struck a stone jetty, causing significant damage, police said.

There were eight passengers aboard the vessel and two sustained injuries, police said.

After the collision, Mangiameli docked the vessel at a local dock where officers from the Sag Harbor Village Police Department responded and rendered assistance, police said.

Mangiameli left the scene while the injured passengers were receiving medical treatment, police said.

The two passengers who sustained serious physical injuries were taken to a local hospital for treatment; their injuries included a broken rib, a leg fracture and vertebrae fracture, police said.

Mangiameli was arrested and charged with vessel operator fails to report accident, personal injury, an E felony; reckless operation of a vessel, unreasonable speed, a violation; vessel owner fails to provide ID, personal injury accident, a B misdemeanor; third-degree assault, recklessly causing physical injury, an A misdemeanor; second-degree assault, recklessly cause serious physical injury, a D felony; second-degree reckless endangerment, an A misdemeanor; and multiple violations of the New York State navigation law, police said.
