SOUTHAMPTON, NY — A Hampton Bays man was arrested after driving while intoxicated and crashing in Southampton with a child under 16 in the vehicle, police said.
According to Southampton Town police, the incident took place on Saturday at 4:08 p.m. Police received a call regarding a one-car crash on Hills Station Road in Southampton, authorities said.
Responding officers located the vehicle in the woods at that location with the man still in the driver's seat, police said.
Upon further investigation, the driver was identified as Hediberto Rojas, 36; he was found to be operating his vehicle while intoxicated by alcohol and with a child passenger under the age of 16, police said.
Rojas was subsequently arrested and the child was released to a family member; neither was injured, police said.
Rojas was taken to police headquarters and was processed and held for morning arraignment; he was charged with driving while intoxicated, a felony under Leandra’s Law, police said.
