EAST END, NY — Residents will come together on the East End Wednesday night in a series of vigils after the death of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo.
The "Shine a Light" vigils, to be held in Southampton at Agawam Park, East Hampton at the Hook Mill, Westhampton Beach at the gazebo, Riverhead at Town Hall, and in Greenport at Mtichell Park, take place at 7 p.m. Those participating are asked to bring flashlights or candles.
According to the Associated Press, a U.S. Immigration and Customs officer shot and killed Salgado Araujo in Houston last week after he attempted to evade arrest during an enforcement operation.
The Department of Homeland Security told the AP in a statement that the man "ignored commands and attempted to ram an agent who fired his weapon in self-defense," adding that he was living in the United States without legal permission — and hit an ICE vehicle.
ICE representatives did not immediately respond to a request for further comment by Patch.
"Another human being in America, the land of the free, was shot and murdered by federal agents," vigil organizers said. "We demand justice for Lorenzo. We gather to mourn and remember him. We call on our communities to stand up to the forces at play so we can keep each other safe."
