SOUTHAMPTON, NY — A man found unconscious in the water during the Mighty Hamptons Triathlon has died, police said.
According to Southampton Town police, on Sunday at 7:09 a.m., a participant in the Mighty Hamptons Triathlon was located struggling in the water of Noyack Bay during the first part of the race.
The swimmer went unconscious and was removed from the water by lifeguards and the Southampton Town Police Department's marine unit officers; CPR was initiated, police said.
The swimmer, a 34-year-old man from Long Island City, Queens, was subsequently transported to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital but was ultimately pronounced deceased, police said.
At this time, the cause of death is unknown and the investigation is being continued by the Southampton Town Police Department's detective division and the Suffolk County Medical Examiner's Office, police said.
