SOUTHAMPTON, NY — It was one of the most joyful calls that members of the Southampton Village Volunteer Ambulance ever made — when, last week, they helped to deliver a baby boy in their ambulance.

On Thursday, December 7, at about 6 pm, the Southampton Village Volunteer Ambulance was dispatched to an active maternitycall at the intersection of Hill Street and First Neck Lane, Chief Kyle McGuinness said.

The family was en route to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital just prior to pulling over, McGuinness said. "The crew arrived on scene quickly, rapidly assessed the patient and determined the patient needed to be moved from the back of the family’s car, into the warm ambulance," he said.

He added: "Once transport to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital was initiated, it became very apparent that delivery was imminent. Remarkably, the crew delivered a healthy baby boy inside the back of the ambulance just prior to turning onto Lewis Street."

The entire crew, McGuinness said, "was both awed and honored to play a crucial role in this joyous emergency."
