Boy, 11, Dies After Being Struck By Pickup Truck While Riding Bike: PD

The driver of the truck was backing up from a work site when he hit the boy, police say.

SAGAPONACK, NY — An 11-year-old boy died after he was struck by a pickup truck while riding his bicycle in Sagaponack Thursday, police said.

According to Southampton Town police, at 5:28 p.m., a call came in about a child who had been struck by a pickup truck on Town Line Road in Sagaponack. Jhony Nieto, 42, of East Hampton was driving a 2022 Ford Ranger and backing up from a work site when he struck the child, who was riding his bicycle on Town Line Road, police said.

The boy was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries; the child’s parents also rushed to the scene, police said.

The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation; no charges were filed, police said.

Several patrol units, East Hampton Village Ambulance, the Bridgehampton Fire Department and Bridgehampton Volunteer Ambulance responded to the scene to render aid, police said.
