This illustrated lecture traces the remarkable career of John Singer Sargent (1856– 1925), from his rise as a portrait painter in Paris to the scandal surrounding Madame X in 1884 that prompted his move to England. Slaughter will examine how Sargent overcame professional adversity to become one of the defining artists of the Gilded Age, producing many of the era's most iconic portraits while expanding his artistic vision well into the early twentieth century. The talk arrives amid renewed public interest in Sargent's work, following major retrospectives marking the centenary of the artist's death.
 Drawing upon decades of experience as both an accomplished painter and educator, Slaughter offers audiences an insightful look at Sargent's technical brilliance, artistic evolution, and enduring legacy. A distinguished artist in his own right, Neill Slaughter earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Georgia in 1975 and a Master of Fine Arts from Indiana University in 1978. He taught fine arts at the university level for more than four decades while exhibiting his drawings and paintings nationally and internationally. His work, often inspired by the people and places he has encountered through extensive travel and teaching abroad, has earned numerous honors, including a Ford Foundation Fellowship, a Scottish Arts Council Grant, an LMU Research Grant to Africa, a Fulbright Fellowship to India, and Long Island University's David Newton Award for Excellence in Teaching. In 2008, he mounted a thirty-year retrospective of his work, was granted Professor Emeritus status by Long Island University in 2017 following his retirement, and in 2022 celebrated a fifty-year retrospective.

 About the lecturer: Artist Neill Salughter graduated with a BFA degree in 1975 from the University of Georgia and received his MFA in 1978 from Indiana University in Bloomington. Until his retirement in 2016, Professor Slaughter taught fine arts courses at the university level for nearly four decades. Additionally, he has exhibited his drawings and paintings nationally and internationally. He began his teaching career in Philadelphia at Tyler School of Art of Temple University in 1978 before moving to St. Cloud State University in Minnesota, which invited him to inaugurate their study abroad program in 1981 at Alnwick Castle in Northumberland, England. Upon his return to the United States, he relocated to California in 1983 to teach for California State University and in 1987 for Loyola Marymount University, where again he journeyed abroad to teach at the University of Kent in Canterbury, England in 1989. In 1993, Professor Slaughter moved to Southampton, NY, to begin his nearly quarter century tenure teaching for Long Island University. Slaughter was awarded Professor Emeritus in 2017. He resides in Southampton, NY, and New York City.
 The Southampton History Museum's free public programs are made possible, in part, by funding from the residents of the Southampton Union Free School District.
