6-Year-Old Girl Run Over By Relative's Vehicle While Sledding

The child was sledding in a parking lot when a relative's Jeep rolled over her despite attempts to stop it, police say.

SOUTHAMPTON, NY — A little girl, 6, was run over while sledding in the parking lot of Southampton Youth Services Sunday afternoon, police said.

According to Southampton Town Police, an emergency call came in at 12:05 p.m. about the girl, who had been run over by a 2007 Jeep Wrangler in the SYS parking lot.

The child had been sledding with relatives at the recreation center on Majors Path; after sledding, a relative started the Jeep and was loading the vehicle when it began to roll forward, then struck and ran over the girl, police said. The vehicle continued to roll despite the owner's attempt to stop it; it continued moving forward and struck a Southampton Town highway vehicle that was plowing the lot, police said.

Southampton Town Police patrol units and Southampton Volunteer Ambulance responded to render aid to the child, who was airlifted by Suffolk County Police aviation to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment, police said.

The Southampton Town Police Department's detective division responded to investigate the cause of the accident, police said.
